Backyard Cottage Kits
Our DIY Backyard Cottage kits create a cozy space that’s affordable, energy efficient, environmentally sustainable, and versatile—they can be used as guest houses, rental apartments, granny units, retirement homes, offices, studios, man caves, or even wine cellars. They can provide a source of revenue, a private room for weekend guests, an affordable retirement home for your elderly parents, or a convenient work place.
Each of our Cottage kits include plans specially designed for the amateur DIY builder. You’ll find color coded, easy-to-read 3D drawings for plumbing, electrical, wood framing, and finished casework, as well as a list of virtually every part involved in the project and purchase orders ready to send for those hard-to-find items. If you’re from California or Florida, we have special kits with structural and energy calculations customized to your specific building site. The backyard cottage designs are limited in size, height, and kitchen facilities to create what building codes refer to as an “Accessory Structure,” which is the equivalent of an unattached addition to your house. Applying to permit an “Addition” instead of an “Independent Living Unit” will make your permitting process more affordable and much easier.
We have several Backyard Cottages to choose from. Featuring high wood beamed ceilings, plentiful windows, a large convertible living/sleeping space plus a small powder room and wet bar, the 192 square foot Cape Cod Cottage adds a simple but elegant touch to your backyard as a guest room or even a child’s play house.
Richly detailed, our Queen Anne Cottage design offers simple, ready to use, full size patterns to help you create all the Victorian details at a very reasonable cost, such as sawn baluster rails, column capitals, classical window and door trims, and a long shaded porch. The plan includes a bedroom/living room, a full bath, small kitchenette with a wall of cabinets, built-in refrigerator, and sink.
Intended for the experienced DIY-er, the Victorian Gothic Cottage plan includes full-size gingerbread and wood detail patterns. It has a comfortable and bright "L" shaped floor plan with 12 foot lofted beam ceilings, separate living and bedroom, full bath, a built-in wet bar, walk-in closet, and enclosed pantry-linen closet.
A completed DIY cottage would run approximately $17,000 to $36,000, saving you money and greatly increasing the value of your property. The same cottage, if custom built by a general contractor, would cost the owner approximately between $150,000 to $300,000. The financial incentive to build it yourself from our pre-engineered and documented sets of plans is obvious.
Our DIY Backyard Cottage kits sell from $499 and include everything you need to layout, purchase, and build a Backyard Cottage. Whether you choose to build it yourself or hire out all of the labor, our packages offer substantial savings for any backyard cottage project.
